Pictures were included in cigarette packets for advertising and propaganda purposes. Baseball cards in the USA were particularly well-known and among the first of their kind; in Austria (after the First World War), they were mostly landscape paintings. In Germany, encyclopaedic and single–theme albums were created to bring together the individual images. They became particularly popular in the late 1920s and, by 1933 at the latest, were being produced in collaboration with the NSDAP. The themes cover a wide range and are cited as an important part of Germany’s visual memory.
