Goldleder

Pronunciation: /ˈɡɔltˌleːdɐ/
Language: Deutsch

Description

Bedeutende Produktionszentren waren Spanien (v. a. Córdoba, Sevilla), Italien (v.a.

Gold leather (French: cuir de Cordoue) is an artistically decorated, gilded or silvered leather that has been used since the Middle Ages as wall covering and for decorative purposes (e.g., bookbinding, furniture, church vestments). In the process, gold or silver leaf is applied to sheep or calf leather coated with parchment glue or egg white, and then covered with a varnish made from rosin and sandarac.

Its origin is believed to be in Ghadames (Libya), from where it spread to Spain via the Moors. Important production centers included Spain (especially Córdoba and Seville), Italy (especially Venice), France, Flanders, the Netherlands, and England. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, there was a revival through (imitation) gold leather manufactories in Europe, Japan, and the USA.
