The painting of enamel signs is applied to slightly curved copper sheet that is enameled white on both sides in multiple layers. The lettering is done using a very finely ground enamel powder (painting enamel) and a (painting) oil. For gold lettering, liquid burnish or bright gold, as commonly used in porcelain painting, can be applied. Both enamel and gold painting are then fired in the kiln.
