Polimentvergoldung

Pronunciation: /ˈpoːlimɛntfɛɐ̯ˌɡɔldʊŋ/
Language: Deutsch

Description

Poliment gilding (from the French polir “to smooth”) has been known since antiquity. Bole (yellow or red pigment containing clay) mixed with organic glue is applied to a chalk ground. The gold leaf is picked up with a brush that is electrostatically charged by rubbing it against the skin. The gold leaf is then placed on the surface to be gilded with a single dab of the brush. The gold remains matte or it is polished to a shiny finish with a polishing stone (agate, hematite, or animal tooth).

Gilding tools: Gold leaf, silver leaf, metal leaf; shell gold; goldbeater skin; rosin; sandarac; mixtion oil; bole (earth pigments); agate; gilder’s tip with squirrel hair; gilding cushion; gilding knife
