Gstampa

Language: South Tyrolean

Description

The Gstampa is a limping beggar who, according to folk legend, wandered from farm to farm through the Villnöss Valley on December 21, St. Thomas Day, until the turn of the century. St. Thomas Day marks the beginning of the Rauhnächte (Twelve Nights of Christmas) and is a Christian Christmas tradition. Krapfen, a sweet fried dish, would be left on the roofs of houses for this not entirely unwelcome visitor, whom people nevertheless also feared. The gifts were intended to appease spirits and the deceased.
