Description

The image shows a tapestry embroidered by my mother in the 1980s. Borrowed from the name of the famous French tapestry factory Manufacture des Gobelins, the word gobelin means wall decoration, or a tapestry with a picture. Tapestries such as these reached the Balkans through the German embroidery company of Jacob Wiehler, founded in the late nineteenth century. Tapestry remained popular in Yugoslavia after World War II (see Wiehler-Gobelin), with every house sporting several tapestries at the end of the twentieth and beginning of the twenty-first century. They were made by hand by women (generally, in fact, young girls) following patterns to be proudly displayed; despite coming the West, tapestries found their way into homes and became synonymous with Yugoslavian domestic interiors. They are made much less today, though there has been a resurgence in the trend of collecting and preserving tapestries from older family members. They can be found in vintage/ethno-style cafes, as a reminder of times gone by and the painstaking handwork of our mothers and grandmothers.
