Gimp work (sometimes called wire work) refers to an extremely intricate form of hairwork that involves looping strands of hair around a pin or wire to create a chain (or gimp) that can then be manipulated into three-dimensional shapes. In many cases, gimp work is used to create hairwork flowers or bouquets that may be placed under glass domes as sculptures of sorts, or set behind frames, sometimes accompanied by a photograph. This type of hairwork lends itself particularly well to “family portraits” in which the hair of multiple different family members is combined. Since gimp work is quite technical, it was most often completed by paid professionals or upper-class women who had the time and resources to perfect their skills.
