Quartinhas are little jars of clay or crockery which can be found in terreiros (temples) or private shrines for the Orishas. They serve as a vessel for the spiritual powers (axé) and connector to the orishas.
They can be simple or decorated. When decorated the devotee follows the direction of their orisha. They are filled with varied liquids, such as water, cachaça, or wine. Depending on the preference of the deity. But most common is water.
These Quarinhas serve as personal connections to one’s orishas and thus should only be handled by its owner.
