Often translated from Tibetan as ‘blessing’, jinlap can describe the accumulated evidence of an object’s effective use and maintenance and/or its capacity to transmit positive influence. It is both material and dynamic, and is cultivated through touch, ritual and/or devotional action. It can be transmitted by sight, taste or hearing but is most commonly activated through direct physical contact between a practitioner and religious objects like texts, relics, monuments (e.g. stūpa) and images of deities or religious teachers. Through accumulated Buddhist practice and handling, jinlap change ordinary dirt and debris – e.g. dust, metal corrosion, broken threads – into a valued and ritually-empowered substance. Jinlap can also be cultivated through offerings and exists parallel to an image or object’s integrity. It can often outlive the legible image of a deity or text and be transmitted in any setting including temples, religious monuments, at home or in a museum. The continued ability to demonstrate, accumulate or transmit jinlap is often a priority in conservation decision-making.
