The man of leaves or medicine is the community’s chief doctor. He has a thorough knowledge of medicinal plants, but also of anatomy (Notue/Perrois 1984, p. 69). He often uses a totem animal to enrich his knowledge, which carries out a number of tasks on his behalf. This dual animal allows him to travel through the bush and forests, and to acquire knowledge more easily and quickly. He is also responsible for performing autopsies on the bodies of the deceased. (Salpéteur 2010, 78) This practice enables him to master human anatomy. In addition, his knowledge is sometimes transmitted to him through dreams. In this case, the spirits of his ancestors take charge of his training by revealing to him, in the bush, the different plants, their names and their uses. (Achegui 2018) He can then pass on his knowledge to his descendants or to anyone wishing to perform this function. Plants play an essential role in his therapeutic protocol, which is why the word Afhu (meaning leaf) is part of his title.
