Choga is a traditional type of Korean housing, which is characterised by a thatched roof. The materials used vary depending on region; rice straw was very common, though. The time and place of origin are unknown. However, this type of architecture was common until the mid-20th century and was mostly used for farmhouses. The roof is characterized by its simplistic, yet practical design, representing Confucian ideals. On top of the roof, plants like pumpkins were grown.
Another feature of Choga houses was Ondol – a floor heating system. Floor heating is common in Korea and is still a defining marker in its culture.
