Description

Literally the man of the tarantula, he is a doctor and a diviner. He uses tarantulas or cowrie shells for divination. He also uses plants and sacred words for healing. Since the emergence of the Gwísī and Nkémsī diviners, this diviner has lost his notoriety and vigour. (Kouemo 2018) However, in the Bamiléké chiefdoms, he enjoyed the role of chief oracle. He is called upon to divine the causes of death, failure, or illness, or to predict and analyse future events. In his compound, he keeps a cavity containing a tarantula that he cares for. During each consultation, he breaks sticks and throws them into the opening of the hole. When the tarantula comes out, it knocks them over. The Ngaŋnga then analyses their arrangement, each of which corresponds to an astrological sign that allows him to divine the course of the patient’s life (Notue/Perrois 1984, 69). The Ngaŋnga derives his knowledge from a higher power or from the legacy of a master.
